ROLE of the POSITION
The Senior Web Developer (back-end) is responsible for ensuring that the UNLV website – the universitys most visible marketing, communication and recruitment vehicle that receives 2.5 million page views per month – is functional, secure, and remains online for all stakeholders. This is accomplished through custom PHP and JavaScript web programming, monitoring performance and analytics, building and fine-tuning backend infrastructure and serving as a key contact with vendors that provide web services to the university.
In addition to a brand marketing communications vehicle for the university, the web domain hosts key components to business operations that include a degree database to maintain accreditation, is an integral part of the emergency notification system for campus and accompanying requirements for the Clery Act, ADA accessibility, compliance, and recruitment of prospective students.
This position also serves as a key university resource and thought leader when it comes to web content management systems, back-end web programming and software integration with services such as campus digital signage.
This position requires a very broad set of skills in order to perform the necessary functions.
The senior web developer (back-end) will be part of the Web & Digital Strategy team within the University Marketing & Communications unit in the Division of Integrated Marketing & Branding. The position will report to the interim senior director of Web & Digital Strategy. This senior web developer (back-end) will not have personnel managerial responsibilities, however they will be instrumental in guiding a team of peers in effectively managing the development of the UNLV.edu website. The Web & Digital Strategy team consists of a senior web developer, who focuses on the front- end development of the website; an assistant director of development, who oversees all of the new site development, maintenance, and the help desk staff; a web specialist, who builds new department websites and manages the master calendar; and a web communications specialist who works with communicators across the university to continually develop an effective web presence for their units.
QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires a bachelors from a regionally accredited college or university and 8+ total years of related web development experience with a minimum of 4 years of direct experience in back-end programming.

Equivalent Experience of 10+ total years of related web development experience with a minimum of 4 years of direct experience in back-end programming.
Preferred qualification includes a bachelors degree in computer science or a related field or equivalent experience in a related field, and experience in higher education.
Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency with modifying open source code and developing application modules within a web content management system (Drupal 7.x or 8.x preferred)
- Proficiency with site-building, theming, coding, and maintenance utilizing a web content management system platform (Drupal 7.x or 8.x preferred and WordPress a plus)
- Proficiency developing websites/pages using HTML and CSS
- Proficiency designing and modifying relational databases, preferably MySQL
- Proficiency with web scripting languages, preferably PHP, JavaScript, Symphony, and Twig
- Experience with API libraries and frameworks (HTTP/REST/JSON) as well as integrations with YouTube API, Google Maps API, and Google Apps
- Experience with testing code, clearly documenting code, and use of version control systems such as Git
- Experience in web infrastructure/back-end including Linux, Nginx, and Apache
- Experience in design, including Accessibility (WCAG 2.0 AA and Section 508 compliance) and Bootstrap framework
- Experience in search engines including Google CSE and Apache SOLR
- Familiarity with user centered design methodologies and usability design principles
- Familiarity with vendor technology including Pantheon and Cloudflare
SALARY RANGE
Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. Position is contingent upon funding.
